When things got tough, Lefty made a deal with the Federales to turn Pancho in for the reward. They managed to make enough of a name for themselves that the Mexicans posted a reward for them. Pancho and Lefty ended up in Mexico where they engaged in their chosen profession. Pancho and Lefty were a couple of outlaws that, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, decided to try their luck down south. Steve Earle's "Billy Austin" and "Ellis Unit One" from the Dead Man Walking soundtrack. If you like that song, here are a few others you'd probably like tooīruce Springsteen's Highway Patrolman from Nebraska and "Townes Van Zandt is the greatest songwriter who ever lived and I'd climb up on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say so." And as for Townes, remember that Steve Earle (who would be a contender for the Title/Active division) said IMHO Pancho and Lefty is one of the most perfect songs ever written.
Zohar, good question and you've clearly got good taste. Notice how Townes plays with the key "they only let him hang around/slip away/go so long" line. On the same page there's a link to a 1993 version with Jerry Douglas on Dobro and Mark O'Connor on fiddle. Interesting hearing Townes tell the story-and wear that scary tennis shirt. Willie and Waylon's version is good but I think Emmy Lou's is best. Seeing westerns and reading journals of people from the era of the 1600's to 1900 all agree on many of these points. They would often say "how can we arrest our uncle or cousin." state police were the only ones you might call in an emergency. In Chimayo, NM, it was difficult to get local police to do anything.
PONCHO AND LEFTYS HOW TO
They know how to find someone fast, if they need to. "the Federales say, they could have had him any day".my experience says it wasn't as much saving face as it is the fact that most of the Federales were likely related and had sympathy for Pancho. Families are large but when the grandma's live to be 50 they've usually lost a husband and a few kids. "You weren't your Mama's only boy, but her favorite one it seems", The Mothers rule in that society. Its totally legal in New Mexico to carry an unconcealed weapon. I've been approached many times with a gun stuck in someones pants. Such as "he wears his gun outside his pants, for all the honest world to feel". the Indians robbed the Spanish and Mexicans, the Spanish robbed the Anglos. It was often considered more honest than being a Federale. Also the history of the region includes being a "bandit" as an almost honorable career. Having lived in New Mexico and understanding the Spanish culture there and still having to carry a gun all the time, yes the old west still lives, there are parts of the song I would have missed. There are other cultural factors no one seems to talk about.
